Medical Validity Timeline
Under 45 Years Old
Your initial medical is required when you first apply for your provisional HGV/PCV license. It is usually valid for 5 years.
Aged 45 to 65
From the age of 45, you must undergo a D4 medical every 5 years to renew your professional driving entitlement.
Over 65 Years Old
Drivers aged 65 and over are required to complete a D4 medical assessment every single year.

Most council require a Medical summary from the GP. NHS APP is preferred. Please note Wolverhampton and TFL require the FULL MEDICAL HISTORY ( NHS APP allows full medical acesss therefore is preferred)

Please note that standard D4 medicals do not typically include a physical drug or alcohol test. However, the doctor will ask specific questions regarding your history with substances. Being honest is crucial, as the DVLA cross-references this information. Some employers may require a separate drug screen.
